Overview & Brief History

Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is a city rich in history, culture, and architectural beauty. Situated on the banks of the Danube River, Bratislava boasts a charming old town with cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and lively squares. With its blend of medieval and modern influences, Bratislava offers visitors a unique and captivating experience.

A Brief History

Bratislava has a long and storied history that dates back to ancient times. The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic era, with evidence of Celtic and Roman settlements found in the region. In the 9th century, Bratislava (then known as Pressburg) became an important center of the Great Moravian Empire.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Bratislava flourished as a key trading hub and royal residence under various rulers, including the Kingdom of Hungary and the Habsburg Monarchy. The city’s strategic location along the Danube River contributed to its economic and cultural significance.

In the 20th century, Bratislava experienced significant changes as it became part of Czechoslovakia following the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after World War I. During the communist era, Bratislava served as the capital of Slovakia within the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.

Since the peaceful Velvet Revolution in 1989 and the subsequent dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993, Bratislava has emerged as the capital of an independent Slovakia. The city has undergone extensive revitalization and modernization, preserving its historic charm while embracing the opportunities of the 21st century.
