Traveling to Europe is about to change for millions of visa-exempt travelers. Starting in mid-2025, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will become a requirement for entry into 30 European countries.
Designed to enhance security and streamline border processes, ETIAS promises to reshape how visitors experience travel to the continent. Here’s everything you need to know about this new travel authorization system.
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS, or the European Travel Information and Authorization System, is a new electronic travel authorization for short-term visits. Think of it as Europe’s version of the U.S. ESTA system—a quick and simple pre-screening measure for travelers from visa-exempt countries.
While it’s not a visa, ETIAS ensures enhanced security by pre-approving travelers before they arrive.
Once approved, ETIAS allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, covering tourism, business, transit, or medical purposes. For Americans, it’s a straightforward process with minimal costs, ensuring that your focus remains on exploring Europe’s treasures.
Why is ETIAS Being Introduced?
As global travel increases, so do the challenges of maintaining secure borders. Much like the U.S. ESTA system, ETIAS aims to:
- Enhance Security: By pre-screening travelers, European authorities can identify potential risks before they reach the continent.
- Streamline Entry: With travelers pre-approved, border checks will become faster and more efficient.
- Modernize Border Management: ETIAS is part of a broader effort to improve coordination and safety across European Union member states.
This added layer of security ensures that Europe remains a safe and welcoming destination for all legitimate travelers.
Who Needs ETIAS?
If you’re a citizen of a visa-exempt country, including the United States, Canada, and Australia, you’ll need ETIAS to visit Europe. The requirement applies to all travelers, regardless of age, meaning families traveling with children must obtain individual authorizations for every member.
Countries requiring ETIAS include popular destinations such as France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, along with non-Schengen countries like Croatia and Bulgaria. EU citizens and those requiring traditional visas are exempt from this new system.

How to Apply for ETIAS?
Applying for ETIAS is simple, fast, and affordable. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
- Provide Personal Information: Enter your name, date of birth, and passport details. Note that ETIAS will be linked to your passport and will remain valid for up to three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you’ll need to apply for a new ETIAS authorization.
- Answer Travel and Security Questions: Share your travel history and answer basic security-related questions.
- Pay the Application Fee: At approximately $7.50 USD, it’s a budget-friendly step in your travel planning.
Most applications are approved within minutes, but it’s wise to apply early in case additional processing is required. Make sure your passport is valid for the duration of your trip, and stay updated on ETIAS requirements by visiting the official website.
When Do You Need to Have ETIAS?
The ETIAS is officially scheduled to come online in 2025. Once initiated, there will be a 180-day period of grace. Travelers planning trips for late 2025 should ensure they have an approved ETIAS in advance.
Non-EU visa-free travelers requiring approval in the new ETIAS system will have the opportunity to fill out an ETIAS application form. The six-month grace period will also provide European travel authorities ample time to be sufficiently trained on new protocols and a vetting period wherein technical issues with the system can be identified.
Once the six-month grace period has expired, all third-country nationals will require ETIAS approval.
