How to spend 10 days in Greece: Sunset view over Santorini’s iconic caldera with cliffside homes and glowing sky

Wondering how to spend 10 days in Greece? Imagine stepping into a world where myth meets the Mediterranean. Your days unfold under sun-drenched skies, where marble temples crown ancient hills and cobblestone streets lead to cliffside views over an endless sea.

Greece is a place of living history, layered with vibrant flavors, warm hospitality, and island serenity. If you only have 10 days, this itinerary guides you through the essence of Greece—from the cradle of Western civilization to the sparkling Cyclades.

Overview of the 10-Day Itinerary

Our 10-day journey focuses on three key destinations:

  • Athens (Days 1-2): Immerse yourself in the birthplace of democracy, exploring ancient landmarks and vibrant city life.
  • Mykonos (Days 3-4): Experience the quintessential Cycladic charm with whitewashed villages, stunning beaches, and a lively atmosphere.
  • Santorini (Days 5-7): Marvel at the dramatic volcanic caldera, iconic sunsets, and unique landscapes of this Aegean gem.
  • Return to Athens (Days 8-10): Reflect on your journey, with an option for a day trip or further exploration before departure.

Travel between these destinations will primarily be via domestic flights and high-speed ferries, ensuring efficient use of your precious vacation time.

Day-by-Day Itinerary: Your 10 Day Greece Travel Route

Day 1: Arrival in Athens – Ancient History Beckons

Start of a 10 day Greece itinerary: panoramic view of Athens with the Acropolis overlooking he city’s vibrant urban landscape

  • Morning: Upon arrival at Athens International Airport (ATH), take a convenient transfer to your hotel in a central neighborhood like Plaka or Monastiraki. Settle in and take a moment to soak in the Athenian atmosphere.
  • Afternoon: Begin your exploration with the awe-inspiring Acropolis. Wander through the Propylaea, the monumental gateway, and stand in awe of the majestic Parthenon, the Erechtheion with its Caryatid columns, and the Temple of Athena Nike. As you gaze upon these ancient wonders, reflect on their profound historical significance and the foundations of Western civilization laid here.
Tip: Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds. Wear comfortable, non-slip shoes as the marble can be uneven.
  • Evening: Lose yourself in the charming labyrinthine streets of Plaka, the oldest neighborhood in Athens. Enjoy a traditional Greek dinner at Taverna Saita, savoring local delicacies like moussaka (layered eggplant and meat casserole), souvlaki (grilled meat skewers), or fresh seafood. Consider ending your evening with a glass of local wine and perhaps catching a traditional Greek music and dance performance for a taste of the local culture.

Day 2: Athens: Museums and Local Flavors

  • Morning: Delve deeper into the history of the Acropolis with a visit to the Acropolis Museum. Its modern architecture beautifully showcases the incredible artifacts unearthed from the sacred hill, providing context and detail to your previous day’s exploration. Pay close attention to the Parthenon frieze and the statues of the Archaic period.
  • Afternoon: Journey back in time as you explore the Ancient Agora, the former center of Athenian public life, and the Roman Agora, a later addition. Imagine philosophers debating, citizens gathering, and merchants trading in these historic spaces. Don’t miss the well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus and the intriguing Tower of the Winds.
  • Late Afternoon: Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Monastiraki. Browse the bustling flea market for unique souvenirs, from handcrafted leather goods to antique coins. Take a break at a local café, sip on a strong Greek coffee, and indulge in a sweet treat like loukoumades (honey-soaked doughnuts).
  • Evening: Experience an enchanting evening at the Metropolis Roof Garden, perched atop the Electra Metropolis Hotel in Plaka. This elegant rooftop restaurant offers creative Mediterranean cuisine complemented by panoramic views of the illuminated Acropolis. Alternatively, explore the trendy Psiri neighborhood, known for its diverse range of restaurants and lively bars.

Day 3: Ferry to Mykonos – Cycladic Charm and Beaches

10 day Greece itinerary ferry ride to Mykonos with iconic Cycladic architecture and coastline in view

  • Morning: Head to Piraeus port, the main port of Athens, and board an early morning ferry to Mykonos. The journey typically takes between 2.5 to 5 hours depending on the type of ferry.

Tip: Book your ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak season. Consider whether you prefer a high-speed catamaran for a quicker journey or a conventional ferry for potentially smoother sailing and outdoor deck space.

  • Afternoon: Upon arrival in Mykonos, transfer to your hotel, ideally located in or near Mykonos Town (Chora) for easy access to attractions and nightlife. Check in and take some time to relax and freshen up.
  • Late Afternoon: Step into the postcard-perfect Mykonos Town. Wander through the iconic labyrinthine whitewashed streets, adorned with vibrant bougainvillea. Admire the charming windmills perched on the hill overlooking the Aegean Sea. Make your way to Little Venice, where colorful houses with balconies overhang the water, creating a picturesque scene, especially at sunset.
  • Evening: Experience the vibrant nightlife that Mykonos is famous for. Savor a delicious dinner at Kastro’s, where dishes like seafood linguine and grilled lobster are perfectly paired with a breathtaking sunset over the Aegean. Afterward, sip cocktails at Negrita in Little Venice, where the sunset views are as vibrant as the drinks. Ready to keep the night going? Head to Scorpios, one of Mykonos’ most iconic beach clubs, for a true taste of the island’s legendary nightlife.

Day 4: Mykonos – Beaches and Island Exploration

Relaxing stop on a 10 day Greece itinerary: Psarou Beach in Mykonos, Cyclades, Greece with crystal-clear Aegean waters and upscale beach clubs

  • Morning: Indulge in the sun and sea at one of Mykonos’ stunning beaches. Choose from the lively atmosphere of Paradise Beach or Super Paradise Beach (known for their beach parties), the more family-friendly Ornos Beach, or the chic Psarou Beach. Many beaches offer sun loungers, umbrellas, and water sports activities.
  • Afternoon: Rent an ATV or scooter to explore more of the island beyond Mykonos Town. Visit the traditional village of Ano Mera, home to the Panagia Tourliani Monastery with its impressive architecture. Discover quieter and less crowded beaches on the northern side of the island, offering a more relaxed experience.
  • Evening: Enjoy a delicious seafood dinner at a traditional taverna in a less crowded area like Ano Mera or along one of the quieter beaches. Alternatively, return to Mykonos Town for a wider selection of dining options. Consider watching the sunset from a different vantage point than Little Venice for a new perspective.

  • Afternoon: As you approach Santorini, prepare to be awestruck by the dramatic caldera landscape. Upon arrival at Athinios port, transfer to your hotel in either Oia or Fira, both perched on the caldera cliffs offering breathtaking views. Oia is famous for its sunsets and charming atmosphere, while Fira is the bustling capital with a wider range of shops and restaurants. Imerovigli, located between the two, offers a more tranquil experience.
  • Late Afternoon: Begin exploring the enchanting village of Oia. Wander through the narrow, winding streets filled with art galleries, boutique shops, and whitewashed houses with blue-domed churches. Find your perfect spot to witness the world-famous Santorini sunset – be prepared for crowds, especially during peak season!
  • Evening: Indulge in a romantic dinner at one of Oia’s many restaurants boasting spectacular caldera views. Savor local Santorinian specialties like fava (yellow split pea puree) and tomato keftedes (tomato fritters).

Day 6: Santorini – Caldera Views and Wine Tasting

  • Morning: Embark on a breathtaking hike along the caldera trail connecting Fira and Oia (or a portion of it). This scenic path offers unparalleled panoramic views of the volcanic caldera, the Aegean Sea, and the surrounding islands.

Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring water and sunscreen, and allow ample time for the hike.

  • Afternoon: Discover Santorini’s unique viticulture with a wine tour. The island’s volcanic soil imparts a distinctive character to its wines, particularly the crisp Assyrtiko. Visit local wineries, learn about the winemaking process, and enjoy tastings of various local varieties. Many tours offer stunning vineyard views.
  • Evening: Enjoy dinner in Fira, the vibrant capital of Santorini. Explore its lively streets, browse the shops, and choose from a wide array of restaurants offering diverse cuisines, all while enjoying the stunning caldera backdrop.

Day 7: Santorini – Beaches and Boat Trip

Unique beach experience on a 10 day Greece itinerary: Santorini’s black sand shoreline with calm Aegean waters and dramatic volcanic landscape

  • Morning: Explore the unique black sand beaches on the eastern coast of Santorini, such as Perissa or Perivolos. These beaches offer a different vibe than the caldera side, with sun loungers, beach bars, and water sports activities.
  • Afternoon: Embark on a memorable boat trip to the volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, located in the center of the caldera. Hike to the crater of the active volcano on Nea Kameni for a unique experience and the chance to witness geothermal activity. Afterwards, take a dip in the therapeutic hot springs of Palea Kameni. Many boat tours also offer swimming stops in secluded coves and fantastic views of the caldera from the water.
  • Evening: For a change of pace, consider having dinner in a traditional taverna in the charming village of Pyrgos, located inland. This less touristy village offers a more authentic Santorinian experience and often boasts equally stunning views.

Day 6: Return to Athens – Reflection and Relaxation

Luxury moment during a 10 day Greece itinerary: hotel pool overlooking the Athens skyline

  • Morning: Enjoy a final breakfast overlooking the Aegean Sea before taking a domestic flight from Santorini International Airport (JTR) back to Athens International Airport (ATH).

Tip: Book your flight in advance, especially if traveling during peak season.

  • Afternoon: Check back into your hotel in Athens. Use this afternoon to relax, perhaps by the hotel pool or in a nearby park.
  • Late Afternoon: Revisit a favorite spot in Athens for some last-minute souvenir shopping or simply soak in the city’s atmosphere once more.

  • Option 1: Day trip to Delphi: Embark on a fascinating day trip to Delphi, one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites. Located in the mountains, Delphi was the sanctuary of Apollo and home to the famous Oracle. Explore the ancient ruins, including the Temple of Apollo and the Treasury of the Athenians, and marvel at the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
  • Option 2: Explore more of Athens: If you prefer to stay in Athens, use this day to delve deeper into the city’s offerings. Visit the impressive Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch. Explore the historic Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro), where the first modern Olympic Games were held. Wander through the charming and picturesque neighborhood of Anafiotika, clinging to the slopes of the Acropolis. Alternatively, visit a museum you might have missed earlier, such as the National Archaeological Museum, which houses an extensive collection of Greek antiquities.

When planning an extension, consider the transportation options between these regions (ferries, domestic flights, buses) and book your accommodation and travel in advance, especially during peak season. Tailor your extended stay to your specific interests, whether you crave more beach time, historical exploration, or immersion in nature.

Practical Tips for Your Trip:

  • Best Time to Visit: The shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October) generally offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and potentially lower prices. Summer (June-August) is hot and busy, while winter (November-March) can be cooler with some ferry and flight schedule changes.
  • Getting Around: Domestic flights are efficient for longer distances (e.g., Athens to islands). Ferries are the primary mode of transport between islands. Within cities and towns, you can use public transport (buses, metro in Athens), taxis, or rent cars, ATVs, or scooters, especially on the islands.
  • Accommodation: Greece offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses to luxurious hotels and villas. Book in advance, especially during peak season.
  • Food and Drink: Greek cuisine is a highlight! Be sure to try local specialties, fresh seafood, olive oil, feta cheese, and regional wines like Assyrtiko and Malagousia.
  • Currency and Payment Methods: The currency in Greece is the Euro (€). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in tourist areas, but it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand, especially in smaller establishments.
  • Language Basics: While English is widely spoken in tourist areas, learning a few basic Greek phrases (like “Yiasas” – hello/goodbye, “Efharisto” – thank you, “Parakalo” – please/you’re welcome) will be appreciated by locals.
  • What to Pack: Pack light, comfortable clothing suitable for warm weather, swimwear, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, comfortable walking shoes, and a light jacket for cooler evenings or windy days.
  • Staying Connected: Consider purchasing a local SIM card for easier and potentially cheaper mobile data access. Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, cafes, and restaurants.
  • Respecting Local Customs: Dress respectfully when visiting churches and monasteries (shoulders and knees covered). Be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas.

Customization Options:

This itinerary serves as a fantastic foundation, but feel free to customize it to your specific interests:

  • For History Buffs: Spend more time in Athens, add a day trip to Delphi, or consider dedicating a few days to exploring the historical sites of the Peloponnese.
  • For Beach Lovers: Extend your stay on Mykonos and Santorini or explore other island groups known for their stunning beaches, such as the Ionian or the smaller Cycladic islands.
  • For Foodies: Consider incorporating culinary tours in Athens or on the islands, focusing on local specialties and wine regions like Santorini and Crete.
  • For Budget Travelers: Look for budget-friendly accommodation options, utilize public transport, and explore local tavernas for affordable and delicious meals. Travel during the shoulder seasons for better deals.
