Sicily is a treasure trove of historical sites, stunning landscapes, and cultural wonders that captivate travelers from around the world.
Each city within this Italian paradise island offers a unique experience, making it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a different blend of history, art, natural beauty, and food.
From the grandeur of Palermo’s bustling markets to the secluded beauty of Taormina’s coastal charm, each corner of this Italian island whispers tales of a storied past that you will fall in love with.
Let’s explore the top places to visit in Sicily!
Total trip time: Although Sicily looks quite small, there is a ton to see often with unexpected traffic and roadworks, always adding to your travel time. A good visit would range from 8-10 days. I highly recommend at least 7 days if you want to get a good overview of both sides of the island, but more would be better!
I would also recommend hiring a car. This is the best way to get around, allowing you convenience and access to many lesser traveled sites. Public transit on Sicily isn’t the greatest so car really is the best mode of transportation.
How to See Sicily If You Have Less Time:
- Choose either the west or east coast and focus there. Both sides are quite different so if you’re limited on time choose one area to explore.
- Decide what kind of experience you want to have – beach, history/architecture, food.
- If you have to choose between Palermo and Syracuse I would pick Syracuse, it’s cleaner, prettier, and the food is outstanding.
Tip: If you only have 3-4 days in Sicily pick between Syracuse, Palermo, or Taormina. These are all good bases to visit and explore things in the area. It doesn’t make sense to try and bounce around for just a few days.
Palermo
The Magnificent Capital: Palermo, the island’s capital, is a vibrant city steeped in history and culture. The Palermo Cathedral stands tall, a testament to various architectural styles reflecting the city’s diverse heritage. Nearby, the Norman Palace showcases opulent interiors and the Palatine Chapel adorned with Byzantine mosaics.
Amidst the labyrinthine streets, the bustling markets of Ballarò and Vucciria offer an immersive cultural experience, teeming with local produce, vibrant colors, and the lively banter of vendors.
Monreale
Majestic Mosaics: A short drive from Palermo lies Monreale, famed for its stunning Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral’s golden mosaics depicting biblical scenes and intricate designs are a masterpiece of Byzantine artistry.
The fusion of Byzantine, Norman, and Arab influences in its architecture and decorations showcases a harmonious blend of cultures. The cathedral’s cloister, adorned with intricately carved columns and serene gardens, offers a tranquil escape, inviting contemplation amidst ancient beauty
Cefalù
Seaside Charm: Cefalù, a picturesque coastal town, captures hearts with its sandy beaches and a stunning Norman Cathedral. The cathedral’s intricate mosaics and imposing architecture stand in contrast to the serene coastal backdrop, offering a glimpse into the island’s religious and historical heritage.
Wander through its narrow streets, enjoy the serene coastline, and admire the beauty of La Rocca, a rocky promontory offering breathtaking views of the town and the sea.

The ruins scattered across the valley invite visitors to walk in the footsteps of ancient philosophers and warriors, marveling at the craftsmanship that has withstood the test of time.
The Valley of the Temples stands as an open-air museum, preserving the architectural splendor of ancient Greek civilization. The Temple of Concordia, a testament to Doric architecture, stands in majestic solitude amidst the olive groves, exuding an aura of timeless grandeur.
