7 Tips to Survive Holiday Travel

Traveling during the holidays is bound to be stressful in one way or another. We have compiled 7 useful holiday travel tips to alleviate some of the stress of holiday travel.

1. Signup For TSA Pre-Check.

TSA Pre-Check is an expedited security screening program connecting travelers departing from the United States with a aster screening process.

Passengers can apply for the TSA Pre✓ to determine if they are low-risk and eligible to receive expedited screening.

2. Take Advantage of Airport Lounges.

Many major airports these days have airport lounges, which are hospitality areas that offer comforts beyond those found in the airport terminal itself.

The lounges offer such things as more comfortable seating, quieter environments, food and often better access to customer service.

These are reserved for member holders and select frequent flyers.  The downside is that it can be expensive, although maybe not as expensive as you might think.

Tip: If you don’t fly enough to justify a $500 annual fee, you can get in by the day. One-day passes are available for Admirals Club, Sky Club, and United Club for $50, US Airways Club for $29 when purchased online, and $50 when purchased at the club.

3. Pack Light.

Try not to over pack. You don’t need to bring every piece of clothing that you own. There are plenty of good ways you can save on luggage space to make that trip through the airport easier.

For one, you can ship home any gifts that you buy. Shipping gifts back home that you acquire while on holiday is an easy way to save on space.

Tip: Also, consider buying some disposal items once you arrive, like toiletries and beach towels.

4. Be Prepared for the Noise.

Airports and traveling in general can be noisy. The best way to mentally escape your stressful surroundings is to turn the volume down. And the easiest way to do that is with earplugs or headphones.

Put on your favorite song or turn down the background noise with a set of good earplugs. This could make the difference between a calm trip and choking your spouse after 2 straight hours of that baby crying.

5. Travel at the Right Time of Day.

Flight statistics show that planes traveling earlier in the day have a better on-time performance. And if your flight is cancelled, you will have the option of taking a flight later in the day.

Also, there will be fewer lines at security. Best time to hit the road? When every one else is asleep — early morning or late at night. You can always take a nap when you arrive at your destination or on the ride there.

6. Bring the Snacks.

Pack snacks and drinks, so you and your family will be fueled up for the entire trip.  This is a good idea for both air travel and road trips. Solid food items can be transported in either your carry-on or checked baggage, while liquid or gel food items larger than 3.4 oz are not permitted in carry-on baggage and should be placed in checked baggage.

7. Don’t Forget to BREATHE.

No matter the stress you encounter during your holiday travel, don’t forget to breathe and relax.  After all, holiday travel stress is just as much of a tradition as pumpkin pie and gift wrapping.
