Scootering Around Rome

appian way, rome

Renting a scooter in Rome is probably the best way to experience the ancient city.

There’s nothing quite like it.  Zip past the Colosseum, glide over to the Vatican, pop over to the Appian Way, ride through small picturesque streets, stop along Piazza Navona for a glass of wine; there is just no better way to live and breath Rome!

Mopeds and scooters have become so popular in the city that it’s really become a part of the local culture.  The scooters seem to rule the streets as they glide past cars, weave in and out of traffic, and skip ahead to the front of every traffic light.

Scooter is a great way to get around since you can see and do so much more.  And, you can park pretty much wherever you’d like.  There are ‘rules’ for parking but really I’ve had no trouble parking them anywhere on the street where I can find a spot.

Where to Rent:

There are quite a few scooter/moped rental places around Rome.  The Central Termini Train Station has a big rental station just across the street from its main entrance, which is convenient for those arriving by train.

My favorite rental place is just around the corner from Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica. My Vespa has the best rental service with some of the lowest prices.

Cost:

Depending on the size and model of your rental it should cost you in the range of $40-$55 per day.  You can also get lower rates for a longer rental period.

Safety Tips:

If you haven’t spent any time on a motorcycle or motorized scooter of some type, I would do so before attempting to in Rome. The traffic can get intense and people have very little patience.

You really must be attentive and quick to react. The key is DO NOT HESITATE!  The Romans can sense weakness and will drive right over you if you’re not careful. There’s an old saying that ‘if you can drive in Rome, you can drive anywhere in the world.’  I think it’s true! Always, always wear a helmet even if you’re not going far.

Right on, Jack. Rome is a city of scooters going every which way. I like the recommendation, DO NOT HESITATE…so true. Go for it, and live life to its fullest.
